Directors Bio:

Alla Kovgan is a New York-based filmmaker, working at the crossroads of cinema and performing arts for over 25 years. She is most acclaimed for the 2023 Prix Italia winner CUNNINGHAM, a 3D cinematic experience about choreographer Merce Cunningham, distributed in 35 countries, including by Magnolia Pictures in the US. Kovgan's film NORA (2008), based on stories of Zimbabwean choreographer Nora Cipaumire, garnered 30 awards across genres. She also co-directed/wrote/edited MOVEMENT REVOLUTION AFRICA (ZDF/ARTE, 2007) and TRACES OF THE TRADE (Sundance, 2008), edited MY PERESTROIKA (Sundance, 2010), and won Vienna Shorts Festival’s Grand Prix for her 3D VR piece with Finnish band Suistamon Sähkö DEVIL’S LUNGS, making her Artist-in-Residence at the Museum Quarter 21 (Vienna). A member of the interdisciplinary artist collaborative KINODANCE company since 1999, Kovgan has the Poynter Fellowship (Yale University), Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship, and Brother Thomas Fellowship for excellence and creativity. Miko Malkhasyan is an award-winning Armenian-born, Los Angeles-based cinematographer. For the last 25 years, he has been working on features, documentaries, music videos, and commercials in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Hailed as a true master of light and visual storytelling, he also possesses a deep understanding of choreography on screen, having collaborated with Kovgan on all her projects for screen and stage.
