David Boffa is an independent filmmaker and dog lover currently located in Madison, Wisconsin. For several years he taught art history at Beloit College, after spending time living in Rome, Italy, and Orono, Maine (where he developed a deep appreciation for maple syrup). He currently works as a Producer in the Education Department at PBS Wisconsin.
This started out as an effort to capture footage of my dogs using a super 8 camera and film. Despite having amassed thousands of photos and videos of my dogs digitally I felt a keen lack of their existence in an analog medium. From there the project spiraled into a deeper exploration of how people have portrayed dogs via the photographic image, and where images fit more broadly within the realm of human—and now nonhuman—experience.
