Lynda Reiss, Jon Adler, Carey Borth, Krystal Hardy, Paulina Lule, Ben Soto and Immanuel Baldwin, plus I have to thank Bill Quirmbach, Glen Popple, Rachel Gomez, Jon Kline, Char Burtt, Anieya Walker, LaRheatra Cole, Ricardo Tenorio, Shun Powell, Clarence "Sammy" Aumend, Heidi Dalton and <br />Julia Teeguarden for making this festival happen.</span><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br />And a big shout out to our photographers, Troy Freund and Brandon Cole.<br /><br />And finally to the Avalon theater who could not be more supportive of this event. As an indie producer, Carey has a hands-on approach participating in hiring crews, casting, location scouting, publicity and obtaining budgets and sales estimates. She has packaged a multitude of projects, ghostwritten or been a script-doctor on over 60 films and thirty film business plans and executive summaries, some of which have been optioned and she herself has optioned a number of scripts over the years. </span><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Having been both in front of the camera as a stand-in for Cameron Diaz on a commercial and model since the age of five, she also works behind the camera. In addition to completing some camera work for the feature film "Scare Me" which she produces with writer and director hometown favorite Mark Borchardt, she also cherishes her time working alongside Hollywood stars such as Jason Alexander. Carey worked on the "The Whitey Show" with him at the Radford studio where the TV show synonymous for "sitcom" aka "Seinfeld" was shot in front of a live audience for a number of years. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Carey acquired a variety of educational qualifications with three business degrees from UW-Madison (Real Estate, Finance and Marketing), and obtained her Juris Doctor from Pepperdine Law School (Malibu, CA) where she studied for one semester at the Imperial College in Knightsbridge and one summer at UW-Madison Law School. She also attended Art Center College of Design Night Program for three years in Pasadena, California, studying Art History, Photography and Life Drawing. Perhaps her greatest scholastic achievement is her MFA in Film & TV from UCLA, earned from 1994 to 2002. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">During her tenure at UCLA she worked as a crew member, doing sound and/or acting in a plethora of shorts and student films. She was the Student Government Representative for the Film School at UCLA and hosted weekly gatherings in the sound stage so the Master of Film students could mingle and form alliances for future work upon graduation. In addition to working on other student's projects, she wrote, shot and edited her own 16mm live-action films, a number of animations and won a Five Thousand Dollar award from Lew Wasserman for a film she made called, "Saving the Rainforest". She shot the images used in the animation in Brazil and did sound in Santa Monica. She went on to direct and produce five-camera shoots at the House of Blues in Hollywood and managed a stable of screenwriters for a number of years before moving back to Milwaukee. Since that time, Carey worked for six years with Mark Borchardt of Northwest Productions, of "American Movie" and "Coven" fame and they produced and worked together on a number of music video's and indie projects in the midwest, In addition to helping Frankie Latina with a few locations for his film, "Modus Operandi" she also worked with Mr. Borchardt on the cable show "Made" and the feature film, by Jon Springer, "The Hagstone Demon". A highlight of her film career was filming "The Mark and Mike Show," whereby Jeff Stilson, executive producer of "The Osbournes," followed Carey and Mark Borchardt's crew around as the subjects of a reality Comedy Central show during the filming of "Scare Me". She learned being on a reality show was a lot more difficult and intrusive than one would first imagine. She also obtained cast and performed as a zombie one below freezing night for G4's "Mark and Mike's Halloween Special". </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">As an artist and photographer, Carey has gathered acclaim and sold her works in galleries, via private commissions and at numerous festivals and plein-air events. She has judged both the IFP in Los Angeles and Scriptapalooza screenwriting contests and is truly honored to be a judge at the Milwaukee Short Film Festival for the third time.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5135150415279426788.post-25338157617880862762023-07-06T07:05:00.001-07:002023-07-06T07:05:30.909-07:002023 Festival Judge: Lynda Reiss<p><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZEBDYI7oImcDIZjpsMvZY58HbsvcUDHmaqz4fAalSFlZeAFdh2ov2nKCQ5NrpB-CPopWsx3LDDXwOaAtGF4amKB_DLfvtUsUzwGi7cP9pgptNO8XK_Y1dhQHq4LABDV-yyDyIWinCUh2xY6BSyldJgVpD81VS5BAKySMJ-rE9oD5oF9fKLaciwj_Ryol7/s800/2f48984a70-headshot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="770" data-original-width="800" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZEBDYI7oImcDIZjpsMvZY58HbsvcUDHmaqz4fAalSFlZeAFdh2ov2nKCQ5NrpB-CPopWsx3LDDXwOaAtGF4amKB_DLfvtUsUzwGi7cP9pgptNO8XK_Y1dhQHq4LABDV-yyDyIWinCUh2xY6BSyldJgVpD81VS5BAKySMJ-rE9oD5oF9fKLaciwj_Ryol7/s320/2f48984a70-headshot.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Lynda Reiss is an award-winning director whose character driven films explore the darker parts of the human condition, with a levity from the humor in her voice. Her first film, Ahyeon’s Rooftop, premiered at the Seoul International ALT Cinema and Media Festival in 2020. Before moving to the American Midwest, she experimented with videography in Korean media startups, including as the creative director of InterV, a short documentary brand focusing on community engagement, and the managing editor of Korea Exposé, a journalism startup highlighting underrepresented Korean stories in English. As a journalist, her work has appeared on NPR, Washington Post, Time and the cover of Rolling Stone. Haeryun is interested in documentary films that explore memory, changing subjectivity in the era of climate change, and the limitations of the body.</span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /><b>Director Statement:</b><br /><br /><span style="color: #444444;">My work as a filmmaker is an extension and departure from my career as a journalist, where I’ve reported for years on different Korean issues, for primarily U.S media outlets. As a filmmaker, traversing between both countries, I’m freer to explore the tricky grounds of objectivity and subjectivity, questioning my own questions and experimenting with the language of sensory storytelling in both Korean and English.</span><br /><br /><span style="color: #444444;">Empathy plays a conscious part in both my reporting and filmmaking; highlighting underrepresented characters and observing the particular rhythm of my subjects. A 70-year-old woman goes to school for the first time, stammering while reading a letter to her granddaughter. A young scientist studies the expansiveness of the time of trees, while confined to the tables of her Excel spreadsheet. A chicken, torn to tatters by his peers, moves around in the cage while his owner sings a sad tune about the separation of lovers.</span><br /><br /><span style="color: #444444;">As a director, cinematographer and editor, I am fascinated by the minutiae of movements, as well as the various limitations — both figurative and physical — imposed on our minds and bodies that shatter the illusion of freedom. In South Korea, a largely conservative and male-dominated society, I have focused on exploring the various lives of resilient women. In Milwaukee, I am currently developing a film that compares the elusiveness of bodily freedom in Korea and the U.S, encountering the different repressive structures that inevitably imbue slogans like “my body, my choice” with tragedy and irrepressible hope.</span><br /><br /><span style="color: #444444;">In Modo Island, the main characters are made with stone. They are trapped within themselves, in a world that is also trapped within an ocean. The confinement of the island world is paralleled and contrasted by the nearby presence of South Korea’s largest airport, normally a symbol of escape and flight, that is also suffering isolation due to the pandemic. I visited the island wearing a mask, observing the seagulls and the occasional planes in the sky, probably half-empty. The sculptures seemed so beautiful; despite their irrevocable confinement, their forms still showed a perpetual longing toward the openness of the sea.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5135150415279426788.post-39724022400836529742023-06-13T09:38:00.005-07:002023-08-10T17:03:54.120-07:002023 Film: Wisconsin State Parks: The Volunteers<span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Wisconsin State Parks: The Volunteers by Katelyn Erath</b></span><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Sherwood, WI (Milwaukee Premiere)</b></span><div><div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #666666; font-size: x-small;">Running Time: 10 minutes<br />Block 3: September 9th, 3:30PM<br /></span></span><span style="color: #666666; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">Documentary</span></div><div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><a href="https://omniwebticketing6.com/avalon/?schdate=2023-09-09&perfix=13862" target="_blank">For tickets click HERE.</a></span></div><div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhahMWtYpMhKo5DmyI-KaZk2V9KxNs3sH4oLwsbHntA7MEJJJptMRL4owbUjdWsBKJKMvNuzirs8px5L4ahPizTOUi52lwvOaMzS1VG86mhvg6U0ipzIgdpeurqgo3ddebIq5c5sjjZE8FB3yh_KnWlfpJzG4Z8W0weHMXJmAhKc7cFiD7HoR7v9tIYPg/s1702/facebook%20copy.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="1702" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhahMWtYpMhKo5DmyI-KaZk2V9KxNs3sH4oLwsbHntA7MEJJJptMRL4owbUjdWsBKJKMvNuzirs8px5L4ahPizTOUi52lwvOaMzS1VG86mhvg6U0ipzIgdpeurqgo3ddebIq5c5sjjZE8FB3yh_KnWlfpJzG4Z8W0weHMXJmAhKc7cFiD7HoR7v9tIYPg/w640-h236/facebook%20copy.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;">A documentary that features hard working volunteers and their work with-in, and for, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. A stone’s throw from home, it was where my dad worked and where I attended numerous pre-college classes. It was familiar. Safe. Upon a last-minute college tour, my foundation was rocked as I suddenly chose to enroll at a college 12 hours away on the east coast- The Maryland Institute College of Art. It was the hardest decision I’d ever made, and it challenged everything my family and I had seen as an assumed plan.<br /><br />I would make it again in a heartbeat.<br /><br />The distance helped me establish autonomy as an adult, and it allowed me to question certain aspects of home that had seemed infallible.<br /><br />My Thesis represents this by reflecting on the relationships most influential to me on my personal journey. Family and friends take the form of shapes, as well as textures from letters they’ve sent me. I move through this landscape, interacting with our relationships and exploring the structure and strains of each. Showing in the end that while certain decisions are challenging to make, they are necessary for personal growth.</span></div></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5135150415279426788.post-75442346886782798082023-06-13T08:20:00.005-07:002023-08-10T17:04:19.823-07:002023 Film: Little Bird<span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Little Bird by Madison Uphoff</b></span><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Milwaukee, WI (Milwaukee Premiere)</b></span><div><div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #666666; font-size: x-small;">Running Time: 15 minutes<br />Block 3: September 9th, 3:30PM<br /></span></span><span style="color: #666666; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">Drama</span></div><div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><a href="https://omniwebticketing6.com/avalon/?schdate=2023-09-09&perfix=13862" target="_blank">For tickets click HERE.</a></span></div><div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_GDrOs8wdDjfiIbmqATE2FBy-WySA7gpyRWhK-0rYdXjpGgwQj5OeOEEkAfl75xjPCkCKVopHDK9bDA0PU8RwRl9HEmycMG-aHJdrNknavQZ_VDcB4ugG5iRp2PxZkg5g2BCVojb289PntZnggWLjWys82R9mXp-cBQx8gM7Fo1UdGENFsx0nTXb6Lg/s1702/facebook%20copy.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="1702" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_GDrOs8wdDjfiIbmqATE2FBy-WySA7gpyRWhK-0rYdXjpGgwQj5OeOEEkAfl75xjPCkCKVopHDK9bDA0PU8RwRl9HEmycMG-aHJdrNknavQZ_VDcB4ugG5iRp2PxZkg5g2BCVojb289PntZnggWLjWys82R9mXp-cBQx8gM7Fo1UdGENFsx0nTXb6Lg/w640-h236/facebook%20copy.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;">Family traumas are hard to heal. The story and script were created around the experimental music rather than having the music tailored to the film. It was an immense challenge. The result is an organic melding of the characters' inner lives with the expressive music--illustrating and punctuating their thoughts and actions. This project started when my friend, Steph of Mood Migration, was looking for someone to help out with a music video for a song from their upcoming EP. This song is a collaboration with other Milwaukee artists Feel and Seanie, and collaboration was a big theme through out the making of this. We wanted to make something that was close to our hearts and something that was lighthearted and quintessential summer vibes. Steph and Sean brought the idea to me one summer afternoon and we took it from there.<br /><br />I am elated with how this project turned out and I am blown away with the work done by everyone who helped out on this. I once again collaborated with my good friend, Alyx Byrne, who was able to exercise her acting talent. In addition, I was able to work with Kasey Korbakes, who I knew in Milwaukee’s film scene to be a delight to work with, which her reputation of that was proven. While I had on some of my usual suspects on my crew, I was glad to work with some new faces.</span></p><p style="border: 0px; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; This is her first self-made stop-motion short, produced as a music video for her song, "Robots Don't Tell Jokes." Kelli's 8-year-old twins, Ryan and Kira, helped with some of the direction and production of the video.</span><br /><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><b><br />Director Statement:</b></span><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /><br />This is a bit of a protest against the automation and dehumanization of everything. My husband and many of my best friends work for huge high-tech companies; I used to work for a semiconductor. One day it dawned on me... wait, all these big brains are being paid massive quantities to create things that we basically treat like slaves? That's the goal?! "Alexa, do this! Siri, do that!" We give them human names, but we don't even say please. I wonder what subconscious message that's giving kids.<br /><br />So most all of the materials used in the video, including the robots, are made from wood and nails and parts from the hardware store, things low-tech. The toys that move are wind-up or vintage style tin. The robots were made of reclaimed wood by a guy named Mark Riddler in Leeds, UK, who writes personal biographies (hilarious, not-so-kid-oriented) for each one of his "scraplets." The lead actor (Robot) is "Ray Harlequin" and we've become good friends, in spite of his occasional high-falutin demands.<br /><br />The video also pays homage to my favorite comedians from back in the day. The posters in Robot's room are of Bill Murray in Stripes, Gilda Radner as Rosanna Rosanna Danna, Jane Curtain, Eddie Murphy, In Living Color, the Cone Heads, SNL, and Lucille Ball.<br /><br />Thanks so much for your time and consideration of "Robots Don't Tell Jokes."</span></div></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
